Irish Theatre Institute (ITI) is delighted to announce that Intercity Dublin launched in Florence, Italy last week. For the last year, ITI has been working with the Festival to help identify Irish writing to be staged for the 2023 edition- including a touring production from an Irish company and four Italian language premieres of Irish plays.
ITI worked with the Director (Dimitri Milopulos) to bring new and exciting work to the Dublin edition of the Festival. Intercity Festival is the flagship of the Teatro della Limonaia (now in its 36th edition). It established itself on the Italian and European scene thanks to its strong artistic identity, introducing masters of international theatre for the first time in Italy and bringing international voices to Italian audiences through original productions and translations.
For the 2023 Festival, the following four Irish plays are being presented in Italian translations for the first time:
Conversations After Sex by Mark O’Halloran
Lie Low by Ciara Elizabeth Smyth
Once Upon a Bridge by Sonya Kelly
The Approach by Mark O’Rowe
Fishamble: The New Play Company are also touring their award-winning production of Pat Kinevane’s Silent (presented in English with Italian surtitles).
Intercity Dublin is supported by Culture Ireland to bring Irish Artists participating in it to Florence. Check out the full festival programme on their website.
ITI wishes the best of luck to the Intercity Festival team and looks forward to continuing to share the work of Irish artist with Italian audiences beyond 2023.
