What is Safe to Create 

Safe to Create is a collaborative programme of supports looking to transform workplace culture and practices, and to provide safe and respectful working conditions for those working in the arts and creative sectors.  

Why was Safe to Create founded?  

In late 2027, in response to global revelations of power abuses, ‘Speak Up’ was founded, led by Irish Theatre Institute (ITI) under the co-direction of Siobhán Bourke and Jane Daly. This initiative was developed to drive a crucial cultural shift in behaviour within the arts and creative sectors, fostering dignity and respect in the workplace.  

In October 2022, Speak Up was re-branded and launched as Safe to Create. The Safe to Create programme was tasked with rolling out collaborative supports looking to transform workplace culture and practices, and to provide safe and respectful working conditions for those working in the arts and creative sectors. The Safe to Create Programme

• Know Your Rights: Access essential information for artists and arts workers, including links to free counselling, legal help, and a 24/7 helpline tailored to those in the creative industries. 

• Resources for Organisations: Learn how to identify and address harmful behaviours in the workplace, along with policy templates, support resources, practical advice, and factsheets.  

• Dignity at Work Code of Behaviour: Understand the standards for handling harmful behaviour within the arts and creative sectors. 

• Sign the Code: Find out how to commit to the Code of Behaviour and view an online register of organisations and individuals who have pledged to uphold these standards. 

• Training Workshops: Participate in sessions designed to support the sector in addressing workplace dignity issues. 

• Inform to Transform: Use our anonymous tool to help gather information and drive positive change. 

• Research: Stay informed with studies examining the prevalence and impact of harmful behaviours within the sector. 

• Programme Updates: Keep up to date with announcements and developments related to the Safe to Create programme.
